According to Variety, an insider revealed that the co-chairman of Walt Disney, Alan Bergman, wanted the talks to end with Sony after Dark Phoenix suffered a setback after release.
Sony issued a statement saying that the company understands that Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, will be busy catering to Disney’s new venture with Fox- Dark Phoenix and Fantastic Four. Disney signed a new deal with Fox, and that led to Fantastic Four, and X-Men return to Marvel.
The recent release of Dark Phoenix- which was Fox’s last main X-Men movie, by Disney didn’t perform well, and hence Disney wants Marvel to focus more on their own IP.
Disney has also planned to release its X-Men spinoff called The New Mutants in April 2020. However, it is still unclear if Disney is going to make any changes in the movie.
Spider-man joined MCU’s “Captain America: Civil war” in 2016 and even starred in blockbusters such as “Avengers: Endgame” etc.
After Disney suffered its third-quarter loss which in part is due to Dark Phoenix, it wants Marvel to put all its efforts on X-Men and Fantastic Four. With all these things in the picture, it is imperative that Kevin Feige will have little or no time to make any more Spider-man movies.
Fans poured in to express that they want Spider-man to remain a part of MCU. Tim Holland, along with other MCU actors, has been silent about the issue so far. But, Jeremy Renner, the Hawkeye actor made a plea to make a deal and let Spider-man be part of MCU. There’s hope that Sony and Disney may strike a deal in the future.
